Identification

  • The Social Security number or ITIN for you, your spouse, and each dependent.
  • The date of birth of each person on the return.
  • Last year's return, if you have it: it helps you not forget anything.

Income

  • A Form W-2 from each job.
  • 1099 forms: 1099-NEC or 1099-K if you were self-employed, 1099-INT and 1099-DIV for interest and dividends, 1099-G for unemployment, 1099-R for retirement income, 1099-B for stock sales.
  • SSA-1099 if you received Social Security benefits.
  • If you have your own business: your income and expenses for the year, and the miles you drove for work.
  • If you rent out property: the rent you collected and the property's expenses.

Deductions and credits

Don't worry about choosing between the standard deduction and itemized deductions: Vordana Tax always uses whichever one is larger for you.

  • Form 1098 for mortgage interest, and what you paid in property taxes.
  • Form 1098-T if you or a dependent went to school, and Form 1098-E for student loan interest.
  • What you paid for child care, with the provider's name, address, and taxpayer identification number.
  • Donations to charities.
  • Form 1095-A if you had health insurance through the Marketplace.

For your refund or your payment

  • Your bank's routing number and your account number, to get your refund by Direct Deposit or to pay what you owe.
  • Any estimated tax payments you made during the year.

Upload your forms instead of typing them

With Vordana Tax, you can take a photo of your W-2 or 1099, or upload the PDF, and we read the boxes so you can check them and save them. The whole interview is available in English or Spanish.

Questions

What do I do if I'm missing a W-2?

Ask your employer for a copy. Employers have to send W-2s by the end of January. If you can't get it, you can ask the IRS for a wage and income transcript.

Do I need to keep my documents after I file?

Yes. Keep them for at least three years after you file the return, which is generally how long the IRS has to review it.
