How your Illinois return is prepared

  • Answer the interview once. Your Illinois return starts from the federal adjusted gross income on your federal return, so nothing is typed twice.
  • We e-file your federal return to the IRS.
  • We prepare your Illinois return on the Department of Revenue's own forms, with the schedules your answers need.

The Illinois forms we prepare

Your return is Form IL-1040, with the schedules your answers need: Schedule M for additions and subtractions, Schedule ICR for the property tax and K-12 education expense credits, Schedule IL-E/EITC for exemptions and the earned income credit, and Schedule IL-WIT for your Illinois withholding.

If you lived in Illinois for only part of the year, or you are a nonresident with Illinois income, we add Schedule NR. If you owe Illinois, we prepare the IL-1040-V payment voucher with your return.

Illinois credits we figure for you

  • The Illinois earned income credit, figured from your federal earned income credit.
  • The Illinois Child Tax Credit, for Illinois earned income credit filers with a dependent under age 12.
  • The property tax credit on your Illinois home.
  • The K-12 education expense credit for tuition and fees you paid.
  • The credit for tax paid to another state (Schedule CR).

Your Illinois refund by Direct Deposit

Form IL-1040 has its own Direct Deposit box. Add your bank account and we fill it in, so your Illinois refund can go straight into your account.

In English or in Spanish

The whole interview is available in Spanish. Your Illinois forms are in English, the language the Illinois Department of Revenue publishes them in.

Questions

Can I file if I moved into or out of Illinois during the year?

Yes. A part-year resident, or a nonresident with Illinois income, gets Form IL-1040 with Schedule NR, and the interview asks for the dates you lived in Illinois.

What if I owe Illinois?

If you owe Illinois, we prepare the IL-1040-V payment voucher with your Illinois return. If you also owe the IRS and can't pay at once, you can request a federal payment plan inside your return. The IRS decides whether to approve it, and IRS fees and interest may apply.

Do I need to enter my property tax for the credit?

Yes. If you own and live in your Illinois home, the interview asks for the property tax you paid, your county and your property index number, and enters them on Schedule ICR.
