Filing taxes in Texas: your federal return is the one that counts

Texas has no state income tax. If you lived in Texas all of 2025, there is no state return to file: your federal return, Form 1040, is the whole job. Vordana Tax prepares it with you online, in English or Spanish, and e-files it to the IRS.

Texas has no state income tax

Texas does not tax your wages, tips, self-employment income, interest or retirement income. The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, the state's tax agency, notes that Texas does not levy an income tax and relies mainly on sales tax instead.

When your home address is in Texas, the interview adds no state return to yours, so there is nothing extra to fill in.

What you do file: your federal return (Form 1040)

  • Your 2025 federal individual income tax return (Form 1040), with the schedules your answers need: wages, self-employment, rentals, retirement income, unemployment and more.
  • The federal credits that come with it, such as the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
  • E-filed to the IRS when you are done.

If you itemize: the sales tax you paid

With no state income tax to deduct, a Texan who itemizes on Schedule A can deduct the general sales taxes they paid instead. The interview asks which one you are claiming and marks the box on Schedule A for you.

If you also lived or worked in another state in 2025

Moved to Texas during the year, or earned income in another state? If that state is California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York or Pennsylvania, add it in the interview and we prepare that state's return from the same answers, as a part-year resident or a nonresident.

We don't prepare returns for other states yet. If you owe one, that state's own tax agency explains what to file.

Questions

Do I have to file a state return in Texas?

No. Texas has no state income tax, so someone who lived in Texas all year files only the federal return. If you also had income from, or lived in, a state that does tax income, that state may expect a return from you.

Do I still have to file a federal return if I live in Texas?

Texas having no income tax changes nothing about the federal return. Whether you must file one depends on your income, filing status and age, the same as in every state, and filing can also get you back federal tax withheld from your pay or a refundable credit such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

What if I owe the IRS?

If you owe and can't pay at once, you can request a federal payment plan inside your return. The IRS decides whether to approve it, and IRS fees and interest may apply.
